Does the NJ Personal Student Internet Enabled Device Ban for 2026-27 school year benifit or not?
As the 2026-27 school year takes a major shift on student personal internet enabled devices, I am writing this to point out what happens now in our West Windsor Plainsboro schools.
On January 8, 2026, then Governor Murphy signed legislation (P.L.2025, c.195) requiring the Commissioner of Education to establish guidelines and mandates for each board of education across the state to adapt a strict "bell-to-bell" ban for personal internet enabled devices during the school day through grades K-12. Although the purpose of this law was to maximize academic engagement, face-to-face interactions, and minimize the emotional and behavioral distractions by social media, and all the other apps that are non-academic, there are cons and pros about this.
The pros are as what it says above, but there are cons about this statewide blanket ban across New Jersey Schools, especially West Windsor Plainsboro High Schools (North and South).
For many years, until 2026-27 West Windsor Plainsboro schools, especially High Schools had a "Bring Your Own Device Policy", where students were permitted to "Bring Their Own Devices" to school, this included but wasn't limited to cellphones, smartphones, iPads, iPods, electronic tablets, personal laptop/computers, and bluetooth speakers. Students were permitted to use devices at the teacher's discretion but were required to follow their rules and guidelines. Students were permitted to use devices in lunch, study hall, sub study/Upper Dining Hall, passing time, and after school at their own risk. This gave the High School kids opportunities for autonomy, and more.
Cons for student personal internet enabled device ban…
- Loss of Autonomy
- Affection of Learning
- Loss of freedom, preparation for adulthood, etc
- Having the blanket ban make everything a one size fits for all
- Banning personal wireless headphones is too much, because it takes their noise cancellations away, if they need it
- Being in a high-skate environment of learning
- Feeling guilty for not being trusted
- Mental Anxieties
- Thoughts on the most worst things
Poor High School kids don't deserve this blanket ban at all, while K-8 possibly the blanket ban works, in High School this ban can be too much, and is already too much, because High School is about independence, where students start to have jobs, driving, earning money, etc, they should also have autonomy to have their personal internet enabled devices and teach them appropriate way to use rather than putting a strict blanket ban.
There are clearly better solutions like there should be local consequences for distractions, and bullying, rather than having the whole New Jersey state punished for this.
Hardwork
In High School, poor High School kids have a lot of work, and yet they don't deserve the personal internet enabled device use during breaks either, break times are times to decompress, have silent times, etc too, not just a forced social environment in the real world or like a college.
This ban is also not always safe, because what if there is an emergency, you need to be tracked, banning all devices including a smartwatch also isn't safe, because you need to be tracked during school hours by parents, and some people also use it to earn money for counting steps (e.g. WeWard).
Distractions of this Ban
The worst thing happens, when rooms become louder, you cannot even listen to music, etc on higher quality noise cancellations, especially in sub study areas, because this ban makes others distracted because they can socialize, etc. Although districts have 1:1 district managed chromebooks, the "Bring Your Own Device" program was a benefit, because people actually used their devices as a work tool with chromebook (e.g. reading articles), and using chromebooks for heavy loaded work. Another reason why the "Bring Your Own Device" policy is good, because students can use it to check schedules quickly with more things rather than always opening a bulky chromebook. Based on what I also saw, I see many people complaining how this ban affects their learning, well-being, causes anxieties, makes them nervous, and how the other worse stuff happens.
This isn't only the West Windsor Plainsboro district, it also is for other New Jersey people where you can access here in the bottom in change.org.
Matter affect the K-12 shouldn't have bell to bell ban at all, they should have a local control, and the district preferances. Not just 9-12, includes K-8, this blanket ban causes one-size-fits-for-all, and doesn't have districts choose their preferances.
