A Board of Education Candidate's Statement submitted by Dr. Amar Atre

As a longtime resident and engineering professional, I believe that a great public school district relies on two fundamental pillars: educational excellence in the classroom and transparent, fiscally sound governance from the school board.

The West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District is built on a proud history of academic achievement, vibrant arts, and strong community identity. However, when we look closely at how our district communicates, handles its budget, and manages operations, it is clear we need a fresh, analytical approach to decision-making.

Restoring Transparent Communication

School board updates should never feel long, confusing, or out of reach. Today, busy parents and residents without children in district schools frequently feel left out of key policy and financial decisions.

To bridge this gap, I am proposing two actionable steps:

 "WW-P Snapshots": Short, one-page bulleted email summaries distributed within 48 hours of every board meeting, clearly highlighting key votes, policy updates, and fiscal impacts.

 Community Town Halls: Casual, open forums held regularly to foster genuine, two-way dialogue between residents and board members.

Every taxpayer deserves to know easily where their dollars go and how district policies support both student success and local property values.

Fiscal Responsibility & Engineering-Minded Audits

Taxpayers felt the burden this past April when local taxes were raised to address escalating healthcare costs. This increase was driven by steep healthcare cost increases and declining state aid. While the district captured funds through the state's healthcare spending growth adjustment, administrators still had to rely on drawing down unassigned reserves to plug the remaining shortfall.

WW-P currently holds a capital reserve fund, but the vast majority is strictly earmarked for capital projects, maintenance, encumbrances, and state-mandated surplus limits.

Continually relying on annual tax increases to cover baseline operational growth strains household budgets across both townships. Bringing an engineering mindset to board oversight means systematically auditing our budget to find efficiencies before turning to taxpayers:

 Contract Reviews: Conducting rigorous reviews of administrative and vendor contracts to eliminate hidden overhead and capture operational savings.

 Group Bidding: Partnering with neighboring school districts to pool our purchasing power for health benefits and services, driving down premium costs through scale.

Building Future-Ready Curriculum

As technology accelerates, our K–12 curriculum must equip students to be creators and critical thinkers, not just passive users of software and AI tools. Protecting robust STEAM programs in grades K–8, establishing ethical AI foundations in high school, and partnering with our region’s tech and pharmaceutical hubs for real-world high school internships will ensure our graduates remain globally competitive.

The Need for Competitive Governance

For too long, local elections have seen incumbents run completely unopposed, leaving voters without a true choice and allowing stale policies to go unquestioned. Healthy democracy and effective school governance require active debate, fresh perspectives, and genuine accountability. When candidates run unchallenged, the incentive to re-examine long-standing inefficiencies, question annual tax increases, or improve communication with residents vanishes. By stepping forward, my goal is to provide our community with a meaningful choice—bringing new energy, rigorous oversight, and an analytical voice to ensure the board remains fully responsive to parents, students, and taxpayers alike.

By combining analytical problem-solving, transparent community engagement, and proactive cost controls, we can protect the quality of our schools while respecting the taxpayers who support them. I look forward to working together to build a more connected, fiscally sound WW-P.

I am a West Windsor resident, parent, Vice President of the Village School PTA, and professional engineer. I hold an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech, and my professional career focuses on managing the engineering and logistics of large-scale defense systems. Managing complex technical systems has taught me how to evaluate large-scale operations with an analytical eye—identifying systemic inefficiencies, demanding data-driven accountability, and delivering practical, cost-effective solutions. I am stepping forward to give our community a real choice at the ballot box, bringing transparent leadership, proactive communication, and fiscal responsibility to our school board.
