WWP Taxpayers Deserve Answers. Dana Krug Has Had 15½ Years to Demand Them.

By Veronica Mehno

A $4.25 million purchase should come with a clear explanation.

I asked Superintendent David Aderhold a straightforward question: Why should West Windsor–Plainsboro purchase 72 Grovers Mill Road instead of continuing to lease it?

I am still waiting for a direct answer.

This is the same administration that speaks about transparency, fiscal responsibility, and respect for the community’s tax dollars. Those statements lose their credibility when a taxpayer cannot obtain a basic explanation for a multimillion-dollar expenditure.

What is the financial advantage of buying? What would continued leasing cost? What maintenance, renovation, and operating expenses would ownership add? How long does the district expect to need this property? Could existing district space accommodate the program?

Before committing $4.25 million, the district should be able to answer those questions with documents and numbers.

Dana Krug has served on the Board since April 2011—approximately 15½ years. That is ample time to demonstrate independent oversight. In my view, her response to the financial questions I have raised reflects the posture of a “yes person” for this administration. I expect a Finance Committee chair to demand explanations, challenge assumptions, and insist that taxpayers receive answers.

My review of the district’s financial reports has identified what I calculate to be more than $50 million in accumulated favorable health-benefit budget variances. These are differences between budgeted and actual expenditures—not proof that $50 million disappeared or that Krug personally caused an equivalent loss. But they raise serious questions about budgeting accuracy, the tax burden placed on residents, and the Board’s scrutiny of the administration.

Why did this pattern recur? Where did the resulting funds go? What did the Finance Committee do to investigate and correct it?

I hold Krug politically accountable for failing to secure a clear, public accounting of these issues. Fifteen and a half years of service should produce more than assurances that everything is being handled responsibly.

The proposed property purchase makes those unanswered questions even more pressing. Residents deserve a year-by-year reconciliation showing health-benefit variances, year-end surplus, transfers to capital reserve, and subsequent capital expenditures. They deserve to know whether—and to what extent—those funds would support this acquisition.

I am not claiming that the administration deliberately inflated healthcare budgets to finance a building purchase. That would require evidence. I am demanding the accounting necessary to understand the relationship between repeated budget surpluses and the district’s capital spending decisions.

Nor should anyone suggest that transferring money to capital reserve makes it the Superintendent’s personal spending account. Board oversight and applicable spending requirements still matter. The question is whether that oversight is meaningful and whether residents receive a genuine opportunity to understand and challenge the choices being made.

Even when a financial action is legally permitted, taxpayers can reasonably ask: Is it ethical? Is it necessary? Is it responsible?

Our community is paying too much to accept silence in place of explanations. An unanswered question does not prove that purchasing this property would be wasteful. It does mean the administration has failed to demonstrate to me why taxpayers should support it.

I believe Krug has had enough time to provide the independent scrutiny this community needs. I urge voters to vote her out and elect Amar Atre, with a clear expectation of full accountability for this administration.

Public trust must be earned through evidence, answers, and independent oversight. After 15½ years, taxpayers should not still have to beg for them.
